Manchester United were not quite as dominant in the second game of their pre-season tour as they were in their first.
It was far from routine but Jose Mourinho’s side did manage to edge out a 2-1 win over an impressive Real Salt Lake side.
The Reds struggled early on and deservedly found themselves behind after Luis Silva finished off a well-worked move from the hosts. Phil Jones was once again found to be extremely suspect at the back as the Mexican easily shrugged off his opponent before tucking the ball past the onrushing Joel Pereira.
United responded well and Henrikh Mkhitaryan brought the sides level just five minutes later with an excellent finish. The Armenian then teed up Romelu Lukaku for his first goal since his recent big-money move. Watch the three first half goals below.
The second half got off to a slow start but briefly came to life after Antonio Valencia was somewhat bizarrely sent off. The 31-year-old put in a fairly heavy challenge on his opposite number and was given a talking to by the referee while the player received treatment. The American official then spoke to Jose Mourinho before suddenly producing a very harsh red card.
Salt Lake threatened to find an equaliser but never really managed to create any clear cut chances. United, meanwhile, looked even more lethargic than they did before the break as they saw out the game with ten men. They did have decent sightings of goal, however, and could have extended the lead had they been more a little more ruthless.
