Atletico Madrid were knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage by their local rivals, Real, last night on a 4-2 aggregate scoreline.
Diego Simeone’s side trailed 3-0 from the first leg going into last night’s game but staged an early fightback at the Vincente Calderon, pegging two goals back in the opening 16 minutes.
For a brief period it looked as if the miraculous comeback was on. That was until the 42nd minute, when Isco netted for Los Blancos to all but put Atletico hopes of qualifying for the final to bed – again.
Frustration in the home side’s camp was evident for all to see. None more so than in Fernando Torres.
El Nino was clearly fed up at the prospect of whimpering out of the Champions League at the hands of the club’s fiercest rivals and had a particular grievance with a certain Cristiano Ronaldo to air.
Torres was visibly upset with Ronaldo over something or other and was determined to have some sort of physical altercation with the Portuguese. In trying to rouse the Ballon d’Or holder, the Atletico striker first shoved him straight in the chest, before squaring up head to head.
Even before the referee had intervened, Ronaldo simply found the whole situation amusing, laughing his way through the Spaniard’s best efforts to provoke a reaction.
