Watch: Aiden McGeady Runs Length Of Pitch To Celebrate In Front Of Former Club’s Fans

What ever happened to not celebrating against your old club?

In recent weeks we have seen Romelu Lukaku goad his old club Everton’s fans after finding the net against them at Old Trafford and this afternoon, Irish international Aiden McGeady demonstrated that trotting off with your hands raised in an apologetic manner is fast running out of fashion when he struck a crucial goal for Sunderland against Preston North End.

To be fair, in the cases of Lukaku and McGeady, both sets of their former supporters were on their cases all game.

In those circumstances, it must be too much to resist having a go back at those fans-turned-foes when you’ve just stuck the ball in their net, having taken abuse and boos from their direction with every touch you make.

Lukaku cupped his ear as if to say, “let’s hear your boos now?”, and later referred to the incident as banter.

Today, however, the evident viscousness in which McGeady sprinted the length of the pitch to meet his goaders at the opposite end of Deepdale was telling. This was a bit more than “banter”. The 31-year-old was delighted to score against his former club and he made that abundantly clear with his goal celebration.

This celebration was reminiscent of Emanuel Adebayor’s infamous turn of pace to glide from one end of the pitch to the other to slide on his knees in front of the Arsenal fans who had booed him right from kick-off during the meeting of his ex-club and new team, Manchester City in 2009.

McGeady moved from Preston to Sunderland at the beginning of this season with his manager, Simon Grayson, who made the same switch. The winger’s equalising goal proved to be the final say in the match which saw both teams share the spoils following a 2-2 draw.

Check out how determined McGeady was to have the last laugh in his feud with his former fans:
