Liverpool’s messy goalkeeper situation has taken another twist, with reports suggesting that the could soon have a new number one.

However, rather than making a new signing, said reports have suggested that current third-choice Danny Ward could be set for a huge promotion ahead of the new season. According to the Liverpool Echo, so impressed has Klopp been with the Welsh international, that he now considers him to be a contender to be Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper at the beginning of the new season.

Reports in Italy had suggested over the last couple of days that Liverpool had re-entered the race for Roma’s Brazilian international Alisson Becker, with suggestions of a €65m bid. However, these have been proven to be wide of the mark and it now looks as though, with Simon Mignolet heading for a possible departure after the World Cup, that the Reds will start the new season with Ward and Loris Karius direct competition for a starting spot.

The report suggests that Klopp has been greatly impressed with Ward’s attitude and performances both in training and in the side’s opening pre-season friendlies, to a far greater degree than the manager had previously seen from the 25-year-old. Having made just one senior appearance for Liverpool last season, in an EFL Cup defeat to Leicester in September, he could suddenly find himself as the number one in August.

For Karius, meanwhile, his situation seems to have gone from bad to worse. He has made a very shaky return to action following his high-profile mistakes in the Champions League final, and a major blunder in the midweek victory over Tranmere Rovers has given Klopp a huge dilemma as to whether to stick with a goalkeeper he has defended to the hilt in the past.

In other Liverpool news, meanwhile, Xherdan Shaqiri began his medical on Friday morning ahead of a proposed £13.75m deal to bring the Swiss international to Anfield in the very near future.
