Ireland forward Jonathan Walters will be out of action for a number of weeks after undergoing surgery, the player has confirmed.

The 34-year-old had only just returned to action with the Clarets having been sidelined since September, coming off  the bench in the draw at Manchester United and FA Cup defeat to Man City in the past few weeks.

However, Walters confirmed on Wednesday that he has found himself in the hospital bed once again this season:

The former Stoke man then suggested on Thursday that he could be out of action for around eight weeks after undergoing a trim to some knee cartilage – returning just before Ireland are due to play their next international, an away friendly in Turkey.

Even if he has recovered in time, it remains to be seen if Martin O’Neill would risk him

Speaking to the media on Thursday afternoon ahead of Burnley’s Premier League match against Man United this weekend, manager Sean Dyche confirmed that Walters would be going under the knife but couldn’t say for how long the forward would be  out of action:

Walters has yet to start in the league for Burnley since making a £3m move from Stoke in the summer, while he has lined out for the Boys in Green since the 1-1 draw against Georgia last September.

In our first Mixer Irish Football Podcast of 2018, we discuss Martin O’Neill’s rejection of the Stoke job and what that means for his Ireland role, a new era at Limerick and all of the latest League of Ireland transfer news.
