Last night Wayne Rooney became England’s all-time leading goalscorer as he found the back of the net from the penalty spot against Switzerland.
With that strike, the Manchester United player surged past Bobby Charlton, whose 49-goal career haul had kept him atop the list for some 45 years.
“I’ve been close for the last few games and to have now achieved it is a dream come true,” an elated Rooney told The Guardian.
Aside from breaking the long-standing record, the captain’s penalty gave England a two-goal cushion heading into the final minutes of a game in which they had often struggled. They now sit nine points ahead of the Swiss, their nearest rivals in Group E, and are guaranteed to finish in the top spot.
When Rooney returned to a buzzing England dressing room after the game, he made this speech to his team-mates….

In the aftermath of the historic achievement, a number of England legends took to social media with words of congratulations for the striker, including fellow great goalscorers, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer.

Via a different medium, Rooney’s predecessor also had a message.
“I would like to congratulate Wayne on becoming England’s leading goalscorer,” said Bobby Charlton, according to mirror.co.uk.
However, the proud Charlton added that he was “disappointed” to have lost his place at the head of the list.
It is an extraordinary achievement for Rooney, especially when one considers he is only 29 years old. It seems likely that he will add substantially to his tally in the years to come. For now though, his fans can enjoy the contributions he has already made through this wonderful video compilation, which is currently doing the rounds on Reddit.
Bravo Wayne. Bravo.
