Everton defender Phil Jagielka has only scored three times for his country but with strikes like this being pulled out of the bag in training it’s made us wonder why it’s only been that many.
As Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cuts inside, the cries of ‘cover him Chris [Smalling]’ were to no avail as the United centre-back gives Jagielka far too much room, although, to be fair to Smalling, he probably wasn’t expecting a thunderous, pinpoint volley from his fellow defender to sail into the roof of the net.
Either way, Roy Hodgson will be pleased to see some astute finishing ability from the 33-year-old ahead of tomorrow night’s Group E fixture against Switzerland, albeit it with qualification already sealed and the distinct possibility that Jagielka will never score a goal like this in competitive football.
Focus tomorrow will primarily be on Wayne Rooney, who will have the opportunity to surpass Bobby Robson’s England goalscoring record, having equalled the 49-goal tally against San Marino last Saturday.
