Real Madrid star Raphael Varane has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to join Manchester United this summer.
Varane has broken into the Real Madrid team again this season under Zinedine Zidane, making starts in Los Blancos’ first three games, but has confirmed that he could have been lining up in the red of Manchester against the blue of City this weekend if things had turned out differently.
He said: “It is flattering. Manchester United are a very big club. But from the moment Madrid and I are in sync on my project, there’s no questions to ask yourself.
“I have always said I feel good in Madrid. It is not easy to say ‘no’ to Jose Mourinho but you have to weigh up the pros and the cons. We’re men, we have decisions to make and that’s how it is.”
The French international suffered a thigh injury which ruled him out of both the Champions League final and the European Championships with a thigh injury, but will be aiming to become a stronger player for the experience.
Varane was lured to Madrid by Zidane himself, and it appears the compatriot have a working relationship in the Spanish capital.
“It was really that trust, that support which was important for me, and when I was reassured on that point, there was no question of it any more.”
United signed Eric Bailly for £30 million from Villareal instead in July.
