Louis van Gaal could be set for a return to management with Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports in France.

French television show Telefoot reported on Sunday morning that the former Man United and Netherlands boss was the front-runner (in a shortlist that also contains Roberto Mancini and Fabio Capello) to replace under-pressure PSG manager Unai Emery, should the Ligue 1 side’s owners decide to dispense with him in the coming weeks.

The Ligue 1 champions suffered their fourth defeat of the domestic season on Saturday, going down to Champions League hopefuls Guingamp, and although they are within touching distance of surprise leaders Nice, even being third at this stage of the season is unacceptable given the amount of investment pumped into the playing squad.

Emery’s predecessor Laurent Blanc lost his job for his failure to make progress in the Champions League after three years in the role. With the Parisiens due to face Barcelona in the next round this season, it seems unlikely that they will have much involvement in Europe after March. Combined with their domestic travails, Emery could have something of a battle on his hands to keep his job.

Regarding the three potential replacements, Van Gaal is considered to be the most likely choice, partly down to the fact that Patrick Kluivert, LVG’s former assistant manager in the Netherlands national side, is the current director of football at the Parc des Princes.

The report does however stress that no contact has been made between PSG and Van Gaal at this time.

The Champions League-winning manager has been out of football since he was sacked as Manchester United manager in the summer just gone, after two years at Old Trafford. He was heavily linked with the then-vacant post at the Belgian national side before the role ultimately went to Roberto Martínez.
