Liverpool’s new signing Virgil van Dijk was in attendance to watch his new side in action against Leicester on Saturday – and got a taste of the challenge that lies ahead.
The £75m centre-back was at Anfield to see Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren – the two main rivals for a spot in the starting lineup – and what he saw in the early stages suggests hew won’t have much to worry about in commanding a place in the team.
Just three minutes in Liverpool’s clash with Leicester at Anfield they fell behind to a goal from Jamie Vardy. Sloppy play at the back from Matip allowed the England international to tap home past Loris Kariius for the early lead.
While Liverpool fans have become accustomed to seeing individual errors at the back (though that was only the fourth Premier League goal they have conceded at home this season), Van Dijk’s reaction to the goal suggests he now realises why the club saw fit to make him the most expensive defender of all time.

Liverpool, however, bombarded the Leicester defence from their on out but couldn’t fashion equaliser together. Mohamed Salah was particularly wasteful in the first half, but the Egyptian forward made up for that in a big way as he scored twice to turn the game on its head, notching in his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season put Jurgen Klopp’s side 2-1 ahead.
Van Dijk, meanwhile, will likely be available for selection for Liverpool’s trip to Burnley on New Year’s Day, and while he may not be thrown in at the deep end immediately, his debut really can’t come soon enough for supporters.
