Arsenal have been linked with a move for Mustafi.

Late last week some Arsenal fans had hoped that the Gunners would in fact sign Shkodran Mustafi before their side’s opening day fixture with Liverpool.

However, despite reports suggesting that the centre half had agreed to join Arsenal, it now looks as if Arsene Wenger will fail to land the German international ahead their clash with Leicester on Saturday.

Indeed, such is Arsenal’s need for defensive cover as a result of the injuries suffered by Per Mertesacker and Gabriel, that the north London club have been linked with moves for numerous alternative targets.

Arsenal’s procrastination has alerted rival clubs as to the availability of Mustafi, and there have even been rumours of interest from Liverpool.

Although this has not been confirmed, The Star (via Goal.com) quoted the player’s agent and father as saying two other clubs have joined the race to sign Mustafi.

Very soon you will know about the future of Mustafi. Two or more clubs are in negotiations.

While Mustafi’s father did not reveal the identity of the two clubs, such news will trouble Arsenal fans who are hoping that their team will sign an experienced centre back before the transfer window closes.
