After an association with the club that has lasted almost three decades, Ryan Giggs is to leave Manchester United in the coming days.

The BBC have reported that a compensation package has been agreed between the assistant manager and the club, and he will formalise his departure possibly as soon as today.

He served as number two to Louis van Gaal upon the Dutchman’s appointment in 2014, and though he was offered a role to be part of José Mourinho’s backroom staff, it would have been a demotion of sorts as Rui Faria has been lined up to be Mourinho’s right hand man.

Therefore, he is leaving Old Trafford, probably in the pursuit of a management position as soon as possible.

Though Manchester United are yet to comment on the matter, an official statement will be forthcoming within the next day or so – bringing an end to one of the most successful relationships in the history of football.

Understandably, social media has been ablaze with tributes to the man who has won just about everything there is to win at the club where he made his name.
