Manchester United began their pre-season tour in earnest today with a dismal defeat to German giants Borussia Dortmund. Twitter had plenty to say about Jose Mourinho’s first loss in his new role.

The fixture certainly represented an intriguing game for both sides as they look to ramp up preparations for the upcoming season.

For Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Adnan Januzaj, it was a reunion some familiar faces following their (radically different) spells in the Westfalenstadion.

Several within United’s ranks needed the game to prove their worth to the new boss. Jose Mourinho would have been keeping a close eye on the likes of Juan Mata, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind as he looks to streamline the sizeable squad.

The team was released an hour before kick-off with some surprise decisions included.

Dortmund threw first blood after twenty quiet minutes. A Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang was parried by Sam Johnstone and it was eventually forced him home by Castro.

The next talking point came courtesy of a dreadful Jesse Lingard finish.

Soon later, Dortmund double their lead from the penalty spot following an Antonio Valencia handball. Aubemayang slotted it home from 12 yards.

United went in to the break 2-0 down and with work to do.

Just short of the hour mark, the game momentarily came to life with a couple of quickfire goals. The Germans stretched further in front, Demele smashing home a cracker after turning Marcos Rojo all ends up.

Almost immediately afterward, United pulled one back as Mkhitaryan bagged his first for the club.

The Yellow Sumbmarine racked up a fourth as Castro notched his second of the game.

It certainly wasn’t the start the Portuguese coach would have wanted but United still have a number of games before their August 7th meeting with Leicester in the Community Shield.
