Twitter Blames One Player In Particular For Chelsea’s Loss To Rapid Vienna

Chelsea fans have done an excellent job of raising their expectations for the coming season at an alarming rate in recent weeks. Everything from Antonio Conte’s tactical masterclasses at Euro 2016 to the recent signing of N’Golo Kanté have pointed to just one thing for Blues fans – a Premier League title by next May. Well, Saturday’s result may go a little way in bursting that bubble.

Chelsea lost 2-0 against Austrian Bundesliga outfit Rapid Vienna, conceding eight minutes into the game and eight minutes before it ended in what was a thoroughly deflating experience for any Chelsea fan unfortunate enough to be watching.

Admittedly, Chelsea were playing their first warm-up match against a team who are six games into their own pre-season schedule and who begin their own domestic league schedule next week. Conte’s insistence on trying various formations also did nothing for the result on the night but bodes well for the future as the Italian seeks to identify his team’s strongest shape. Chelsea fans were understandably disappointed, but not scathing in their criticism.

Particular ire was reserved for defender Branislav Ivanovic, however. The Serbian had a particularly dismal season last year and appeared to sink to those depths once again. Whatever about the response to the team’s performance, the response to Ivanovic’s display was caustic.

An unequivocal reaction from the Stamford Bridge faithful. It will be interesting to watch Conte’s transfer market moves in the coming weeks to see if he agrees.
