Is Juventus’s Arturo Vidal on his way to Arsenal? There is more twists and turns to this one than a small trip down Alice’s rabbit hole.
Over the weekend, several newspapers began to report that Vidal to Arsenal was close to being a done deal. It was a bizarre story in that the Chilean midfielder had hardly been linked to the club prior to the weekend and all of a sudden, he was being wrapped up.
The story, it seems, originated from Twitter after a random account translated quotes from Argentine journalist Hernán Feler.
Feler, a well respected journalist in South America, had originally broken the story linking Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal last summer and as such, the quotes were taken seriously.
The tweets effectively stated that, at £21m (an incredibly low fee for someone of his stature) Arturo Vidal was on his way to the Emirates.
Feler retweeted something to suggest it was true and then, the footballing world went mad.
Every tabloid in Britain along with The Independent began to report the story citing the Argentine journalist as their source of information.
However, on Sunday afternoon @MihakSaeid, the original account that tweeted the so called “translations” announced that it was all a massive lie.
See the tweets below (read from bottom to top).
So that’s that then. All a massive hoax… except it seems that it still might not be.
Today, despite the fact that the above seems to completely rule out the move as farce, several news agencies continue to report a done deal.
On Sunday night, Spanish radio station Cadena Cope reported that Vidal’s move to Arsenal is “90% done.”
Cadena Cope are generally regarded as a reliable source for transfer news in Spain and in their report, Cope do not reference Feler as a source, instead suggesting that they have conducted their own investigation and that it comes from their own contacts.
On today’s front page, Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport’s also claimed that Arsenal are close to doing a deal for the Chilean midfielder.
So, is Arturo Vidal on his way to Arsenal? On Saturday? definitely. On Sunday? Absolutely not. On Monday? Well, maybe.
To sum up, watch this space. We suspect this story still has more legs than an octopus on a tripod.
