Brighton and Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton has confirmed that  Richie Towell will a chance to impress this weekend.

The attacking midfielder joined the club midway through the 2015/16 season but has struggled to break into the side in his time there. Big things were expected of the 25-year-old following a tremendous 2015 season in the League of Ireland with Dundalk, but injuries and competition for places have limited the former Celtic player to just two appearances in the past twelve months.

Speaking to RTE Sport, however, Hughton has said that he expects Towell to start in this weekend’s FA Cup tie at home to League One side MK Dons, and that the player is still very much in his plans:

“It’s been difficult for Richie, because of the competition that he has for places in his position.

“We were looking forward to the pre-season, to giving him a lot of games in the position we want him to play in and he got injured and missed a fair chunk of that period, which set him back a little bit.

“But he’s been very much in and around it. At times he’s been on the bench. Very much close to that first-team squad but just found it difficult to get the games that he would like.

“We have an FA Cup tie against MK Dons on Saturday and we look forward to seeing him in that game.”

With the likes of Steve Sidwell, Dale Stephens and Biram Kayal all ahead of him the pecking order, Towell knows that he has a fight on his hands if he wants to nail down a spot in the squad longer term. He has been linked with loan moves away from the Amex, and that could yet still be an option.

Brighton are riding high in the Championship at the minute. Having missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season on goal difference, the Seagulls are looking to go one better this year and currently sit on top of the table.
