The Premier League is back this weekend and one of the biggest clashes of the opening day will be Manchester United hosting Tottenham at Old Trafford.
The complexion of the game may now have changed ever so slightly however, as Spurs’ number one goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, ‘remains a doubt’, according to Sky Sports.
This dents Mauricio Pochettino’s team’s chances considerably, as Lloris has to be regarded as one of the league’s finest stoppers.
Although Spurs can still use the more than capable Michel Vorm, the French goalkeeper is an integral part of Spurs’ armour, particularly as they are away from home for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.
Having fractured his wrist just three weeks ago, it is in some ways surprising he was tipped to play in this campaign’s first game at all. It has been reported he has taken part in some training since the fracture, however Saturday could be too soon to expect a return.
Concerning the game itself, United will be looking to get off to the best start possible with so-called winnable games against Aston Villa, Newcastle and Swansea City to follow the season’s opener.
The Old Trafford club will also be looking to draw on last term’s fantastic 3-0 win at home to Spurs as inspiration for this match-up.
Tottenham have yet to make any sort of major splash in the transfer market but the signing of two centre-backs, Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer, indicates some of what Pochettino was unhappy with last season and will want to remedy immediately against Louis van Gaal’s side this weekend.
United are fancied by many to challenge for the Premier League title this season with a host of new additions certainly helping to enhance this perception and Saturday’s game will be the first opportunity for Van Gaal’s signings to show they were worth the investment.
