This Premier League season will go down as the most unlikely, certainly since the current incarnation’s inception in 1992, arguably in English football history as a whole.

Leicester City were crowned Premier League champions this week, and their remarkable season was acknowledged in the PFA Player Awards recently, with Wes Morgan, Riyad Mahrez, N’Golo Kanté and Jamie Vardy all being named in the PFA Team of the Year.

Manchester United’s David de Gea was selected as the goalkeeper – his third time in the Team of the Year – but do the stats argue differently?

Using the EA Sports Player Performance Indexa grasp of the best-performing goalkeepers for their clubs can be ascertained.

That said, the very first player in at number ten doesn’t exactly inspire confidence for the rest of the list. Still, hard to argue with stats…

The ranking of the goalkeepers in the above list generally keeps in line with their teams’ position in the Premier League table – the top four in particular syncing up with how their teams have fared in the domestic campaign.

It also indicates a massive fall from grace for Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois – an injury-hit (and all-round nightmare) season has seen him place just 15th on the list, narrowly behind West Brom’s Boaz Myhill.
