Top Five Bearded Footballers

With the news that Turkish club Genclerbirligi’s chairman Ilhan Cavcav has banned his players from sporting beards, we have decided to fight back against this outrageous policy by compiling a list of the top five bearded footballers playing today.

5. Gerard Pique

First on our list is the bearded defender of Barcelona – Gerard Pique. Aerodynamically it may not help when Pique is tasked with chasing after the likes Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in training but we are impressed by the effort he has gone to order to keep his facial hair in a well kept manner.

4. Sandro

Next up is Sandro who, just this season signed for QPR from Tottenham. The bearded Brazilian is known for his solid midfield displays. However, Sandro only scored three goals in his time at White Hart Lane between 2010 and 2014 so don’t expect any ‘scissor-kicks’ coming from the 25-year-old.

3. Anthony Pilkington

The Irish international has a superb beard and a separate, but refined moustache combination. This beard only makes it to number three due it’s not yet legendary-like status. However, the Cardiff City midfielder’s beard shot to fame when he debuted for Ireland but there was to be no appearance for Pilkington or his beard against the Scottish on Friday last.

2. Raul Meireles

The former Liverpool and Chelsea midfielder is now plying his trade at Fenerbahce. He is a seasoned international having lined out for his national side an impressive 76 times. The wet-shaven mohawk combined with the beard make for a truly unique look and something we don’t see too often on the football field.

1. Andrea Pirlo

Who else could be our number one bearded footballer but Andrea Pirlo? The very definition of style in an age when footballers’ fashion and beard sense has gone out the window.

Pirlo has stuck to his guns. The beard and Pirlo are as much a part of each other as anything else now. Rumours suggest that the weight added to Pirlo’s face from his magnificent beard helps the Italian’s balance for free-kicks and of course his general sublime midfield play.
