No matter how many experts you have involved in the decision making process, you are not going to please everyone. The debate over who is the best footballer in the world, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, could lead football fans to blows, but when expanded to Neymar vs Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale vs Kevin De Bruyne, or Paul Pogba vs Thomas Mueller, skin and hair will fly.
Well the Guardian have attempted just that, and it makes for some interesting reading. A panel of 123 experts were involved, with Zico, Javier Zanetti and Gheorghe Hagi heading the committee charged with listing the 100 best footballers on the planet.
Messi takes the top spot, with Ronaldo, Neymar and Suarez all trailing the Argentinian.
Bayern Munich pair Robert Lewandowski and Mueller occupy fifth and sixth spots respectively.
Sergio Aguero at ninth and Alexis Sanchez at tenth are the only Premier League players in the top ten.
Manchester United have six on the list, with David De Gea, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Memphis Depay and Juan Mata all included.
Chelsea and Manchester City also have six, Arsenal have five, while league leaders Leicester City have two. Harry Kane is Tottenham’s sole representative.
