Despite being linked with Naby Keita and Virgil Van Dijk throughout the summer, Mohammed Salah remains Liverpool’s only major signing.
The latter has been edging closer to the exit door at Southampton and has been training alone in recent weeks as rumours of a fresh approach from Merseyside continue to swirl. However, it now seems the Dutchman may not be headed so far north with The Times reporting Premier League champions Chelsea have entered the race for his signature.
Matt Hughes claims the Blues will soon table a bid of £5o million for Van Dijk and are confident they can get the deal over the line before their title defence begins at home to Burnley on August 12th.
A move to the Bridge for the centre-back has seemed somewhat obvious all summer considering the former Celtic man’s composure on the ball and Antonio Conte’s preference for defenders in the mould of he and David Luiz.
However, Jurgen Klopp is evidently also a fan of the 26-year-old and could soon get a massive cash injection if Philippe Coutinho completes a move to Barcelona. Even if the Brazilian stays put, Klopp clearly has the backing of the owners having already seen bids upwards of £60 million rejected for RB Leipzig’s Keita.
If the Reds are willing to stump up that kind of fee for Van Dijk, they’ll undoubtedly get their man.
