On first viewing, the Aubameyang to Arsenal story looked looked like the most ludicrous report of the January window. However, after two substantial turns in the story over the past few days, this one is turning into a very real possibility.
With Arsenal’s signing of Mohamed Elneny yet to be confirmed, reports of the Gunners marching forward with their January transfer plans have continued to emerge.
According to a report in the Sun on Sunday, Arsenal have now turned their attention to their attack and have decided that they will test Borussia Dortmund’s resolve with a £42 million bid for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang has been in sensational form for Dortmund this season having already scored 27 goals in 27 appearances and would be an absolutely phenomenal acquisition for any Premier League club to land.
The deal initially seemed too good to be true and quite frankly, it had the whiff of a tabloid transfer fart. However, since the rumour broke on Sunday, two instances in particular have suggested that this deal is a very real possibility.
Firstly, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke immediatly responded to the rumours and, rather than dismissing them as nonsense, he instead attempted to calm his fans by claiming that the club could cope with his departure.
“We can never believe that a club like Borussia Dortmund is dependent on a player,” he told German newspaper Bild. “We are not dependent on anyone.
“When Robert Lewandowski left, we found [solutions] and he even has three more goals than Lewa. We are now so well positioned that we can offer alternative solutions again and again.
“[We want] our team to stay together. We do not have as much money as the top stars in the Premier League, but we have a lot of other things to offer. For example our players were able to celebrate Christmas.”
Putting these somewhat revealing comments aside, Sky Sports have given Arsenal fans even more reason to get excited this evening as they have announced that Aubameyang has, rather suspiciously, failed to show up at Dortmund training. The reason that the club have given for his absence? “Personal reasons.”
Whether that means he’s on route to the Emirates in a chopper or at home with the sniffles isn’t exactly certain at this point in time but, considering all of the above, one thing is for sure; the Aubameyang to Arsenal rumour is no longer a transfer fart, it is a very real story.
Expect this one to run. Let’s just pray it doesn’t end up like that Benzema fiasco.
