Despite being early days in Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United reign, Sunday’s visit to Swansea is almost a must-win.
His cause has taken a massive blow on Saturday evening as news broke of a devastating absence from the squad.
Whether it be due to injury or for whatever reason, without Marcus Rashford, United are a very different prospect. Without the Wythenshawe native’s pace, the Reds become far too turgid in the final third with the lethargic Zlatan Ibrahimovic leading the line.
It’s an absence that could have enormous repercussions for the club with academy product Paul Pogba injured. An almost eighty-year record of having a homegrown player in every matchday will end, if, as is quite possible, Jesse Lingard and Timothy Fosu-Mensah don’t feature.
It would be a damning fact to throw at Mourinho, a manager who’s long been criticised for his misuse of youth talents. More damning still would be the fact that, should they lose in Wales, he will have led the Old Trafford club to the worst start in their Premier League history.
More damning still, it will be the second season in a row he will have done that to his side.
