Twitter Reacts As Non-League Sutton Utd Dump Leeds Out Of The FA Cup

Sutton United, victors of one of the all-time great FA Cup shocks when they beat top-flight Coventry City in 1989, can add the scalp of Championship side Leeds to their collection.

The U’s, currently 16th in the National League table, defeated Garry Monk’s heavily-rotated side 1-0 at Gander Green Lane on Sunday, 24 hours after Lincoln City from the same division) inflicted a similar shock on Brighton and Hove Albion.

The only goal of the game came just over five minutes into the second half, Jamie Collins converting from the spot after striker Roarie Deacon was brought down in the box. The misery for Leeds was compounded with less than ten minutes remaining when captain Liam Cooper saw red for a second bookable offence.

Paul Doswell’s men held out until the final whistle, and they have now qualified for the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history.

Sutton (and Lincoln) will now be eagerly awaiting Monday night’s draw – the prospect of playing one of Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City and (assuming they progress to the next round) Tottenham and Manchester United has become that bit more tangible.

Of course, they could still wind up playing against each other…
