Watch: Sunderland’s Wahbi Khazri Scores Directly From A Corner Vs. West Ham

Sunderland’s first goal in over 700 minutes of Premier League football came in very unusual circumstances.

David Moyes’ side look destined for relegation to the Championship at the end of the season, though their Premier League encounter against West Ham has at least been showing signs of life in the Black Cats.

Having fallen behind in the first five minutes at the Stadium of Light to an Andre Ayew opener, it looked as though Sunderland were heading to meekly surrender yet another three points, in what would be their seventh league defeat in eight games.

However, they found themselves level midway through the first half as a corner kick from Wahbi Khazri sailed directly into the West Ham goal:

The Hammers were adamant that goalkeeper Darren Randolph was being impeded in the build-up the goal –  nonetheless, it was allowed to stand and Sunderland clawed their way back into the game.

However, that parity did not last long, as James Collins put West Ham ahead once again just two minutes into the sceond half. As it stands, three points would put Slaven Bilic’s side nine points clear of the relegation places with five games to play – a relatively comfortable position at this late stage of the season.

For Sunderland, however, after years of circling the drain it seems almost certain now that their decade-long spell in the Premier League is coming to an end.
