It’s fair to say that Jon Walters is something of a cult hero in Stoke. It comes as no surprise then that emotions were running high for fans and players alike when the Irish international announced he would be leaving the Britannia.
The man dubbed “super Jon” has agreed a £3m move to Premier League rivals Burnley on a two-year deal. He becomes the latest member of the growing Irish contingent at Turf Moor. Jeff Hendrick, Stephen Ward, Robbie Brady and Kevin Long are all established members of Sean Dyche’s squad.
Walters joined Stoke City back in 2010, and leaves the club having scored 62 goals in 259 appearances. Despite changes in manager, playing style and personnel, Walters was an almost ever-present member of the team throughout his 7 years at the club. His strength, work rate and combative style meant he remained an integral figure as Stoke became an established Premier League side.
Understandably, many of his former teammates have been glowing in their praise for the 33-year-old.
Gutted to see @JonWalters19 leave. Gonna be a huge loss to the club and also the dressing room.

It’s clear that Walters will be sorely missed both on and off the field at Stoke City. But the Potters’ loss is Burnley’s gain and the move could yet turn out to be the bargain of the summer for Sean Dyche’s side. Walters himself certainly seems eager to inject some flair into his new club!
