A lot of the talk this season has been focused on just how good Philippe Countinho has been for Liverpool. On the other side of the coin, many have wondered what has gone wrong for Angel Di Maria since he joined Manchester United. Viewing these stats, one could deduce that expectation is everything in perceiving a player’s season.
Due to the reputation and the price tag that Di Maria brought with him to Manchester United, most expected the Argentinian to take the Premier League by storm. Sadly, that has not been the case and at present the former Real Madrid star is rotting on the Old Trafford bench behind an inform Ashley Young.
If someone had told me I would be writing that sentence last May I would have assumed it would have been from the confines of a looney bin. Ashley Young is better than Angle Di Maria… Good one, bud.
Meanwhile up in Anfield, Philippe Coutinho was always expected to be ok but not exactly a world beater. He has had a fairly solid season dabbed with a couple of absolutely magical moments and bing, bang, bong… he’s nominated for the PFA player of the season award.
With 500 less minutes played, Di Maria leads the Liverpool man in all major attacking statistics bar one which is goals scored. And in that category, Coutinho leads by just a single goal.
With such similar statistics, how is one player viewed as a nominee for PFA player of the year while the other is viewed as a flop?
