The League of Ireland produced some top-class strikes over the month of April, making the task of finding a winner and incredibly tight one. RTE’s LOI highlights programme Soccer Republic has selected a shortlist of eight, and each arguably deserves to be a winner in its own right.
Karl Sheppard opened proceedings with a well-executed dipping volley away to Bohemians, with Cork City teammate Garry Buckley also finding his name on the list thanks to a classy finish against St. Patrick’s Athletic.
Dundalk captain Stephen O’Donnell finished off a fine team move to score for his club against Bray Wanderers, though a 3-1 defeat at Oriel Park probably won’t be living long in the memory.
Bray also get a mention courtesy of Dylan Connolly, who found himself on the end of a defence-splitting pass from Aaron Greene to score against Shamrock Rovers.
David Cawley is up next, with the winter signing from St. Pat’s almost taking the net off with a thundering drive against Limerick.
Speaking of Limerick, captain Shane Duggan makes the cut thanks to a long-range drive against Derry City at Maginn Park, and from that very same match, Ronan Curtis’ curled effort also made the list.
Last, but by no means least, Conan Byrne, who completely stole the show in March thanks to his strike from the halfway line, is nominated again this time around albeit for a very different type of finish, a brilliant lob over the head of Derry City keeper Ger Doherty.
On the Mixer Irish Football Podcast this week, we’re joined by Galway United manager Shane Keegan, we react to Martin O’Neill’s latest Ireland squad, plus the usual discussion of League of Ireland matters.
