Sir Alex Ferguson Flies To Madrid To Discuss Ronaldo Return

Ever since his departure for Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo has often teased that one day he may return to Manchester United. “In the future, who knows?” being his go to line.

AS columnist Javier Matallanas wrote on Sunday that Sir Alex Ferguson was at the Bernabeu last Tuesday for Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Schalke.

Rumours that the Portuguese superstar may one day re-sign for the Manchester giants have been pretty much constant since he departed in 2009. Considering Ronaldo’s recent troubles at the Bernabeu, murmurs of a return are once again hitting fever pitch.

According to Matallanas, Ferguson watched the match in the company of Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes. Real lost the game but scraped through the tie on aggregate.

The encounter saw Ronaldo score two goals but he looked far from pleased, angrily gesticulating when his strikes found the net. The reason for this lies in the Madrid fans reaction to his relatively poor form since securing the Ballon d’Or in January.

Having gone on an unprecedented 22 game winning streak, Real’s performance level has dipped substantially in recent months with Barcelona over taking them at the summit of La Liga.

In line with their travails, AS recently conducted a poll to gather Madrid fans suggested solutions to the problems on the pitch. 32% of all fans that participated suggested dropping Cristiano Ronaldo. When one considers his super natural performance rate since signing for the club, it is easy to interpret his frustrated celebrations against Schalke.

It seems Ferguson and Manchester United spotted an opportune moment to make their move.

After the game, Sir Alex reportedly met his former player for a late dinner in which they discussed his potential return to Old Trafford this summer.

Matallanas claims that United had a €200 million bid for the forward prepared last year but that it fell apart when Ronaldo signed a contract extension.

According to Matallanas, Ronaldo’s relationship with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez remains poor, and the Spanish giants have not ruled out letting him leave if an attractive offer arrives.

Based on this reaction to fan jeers over the weekend, it might just be that Ronaldo has had enough of the Real Madrid faithful. Watch this space.
