Having needed to bring defensive reinforcements into the club during the summer, most Arsenal supporters were happy to see German international Shkodran Mustafi arriving at the Emirates Stadium back in August.
Of even further intrigue was the sum of money agreed with Valencia for the services of the centre half, who has since made an impressive start to his career in the red and white colours of the London club.
Regardless of on-field displays, the transfer fee of £35 million brings with it plenty of pressure and spotlight; however, Mustafi is clear on how he will handle both and ensure supporters focus on his contribution to the team rather than the cost in recruiting him in the first place – by, simply, ignoring the facts!
Speaking to Bild as reported by the Mirror, the 24-year-old said that beyond knowing that he wanted to sign for Arsene Wenger’s side, he had nothing to do with the rest of the contract and agreement and has already put the massive fee out of his mind.
“I wanted to go to Arsenal, everything else was negotiated by the clubs,” he revealed.
“Of course, this is an incredible sum. And I know what a burden that can bring. Especially in my second home in Gostivar [the city in the Republic of Macedonia where he was born].
“But I could not influence that. So I push it far away.”
While the media and observers of the game continue to obsess over whether or not Arsenal will gain value for money spent in this case, fans will care not a single jot if he continues to marshall strikers as he has been doing recently in the Premier League.
