Seán Maguire has been on fire this season. The Cork City striker’s form has propelled the club to the summit of the League of Ireland table, with seven wins from seven. The 22-year-old has scored in six of the seven League games so far this season, only failing to rattle the net against Dundalk at home, a game in which he provided two assists.
The former West Ham frontman has drawn plaudits from all quarters. As Ireland failed to find the net during the latest international window in a draw with Wales and loss to Iceland, frustrations were being aired that the management are looking for answers in the wrong places by selecting Kevin Doyle, who is in the Autumn of his career in the MLS.
Therefore, calls for an in-form striker in Maguire to be included in the national squad are not without their merit.
Speaking to Pundit Arena‘s new Irish football podcast, the Mixer, Maguire addressed the speculation linking him with Martin O’Neill’s squad.
“It’s every kid’s dream to pull on an Irish jersey, and I feel one day I will.
“I’m only 22. I’ve obviously heard a few shouts for myself to be included in the team. But I’m doing well with Cork City, and I’m concentrating on improving. I have a lot to learn.
“Whenever I do get a chance to pull on the Irish jersey, I feel like I would step up and take the challenge. It would be an exciting time. I look forward to that day whenever it’s going to be.”
It is little wonder that the striker is attracting interest from England.
According to Neil O’Riordan, writing in the Irish Sun, there are two English clubs hot on his heels.
Preston, having raided the League of Ireland for Daryl Horgan and Andy Boyle during the winter, are set to make a swoop for the striker. With Greg Cunningham, Alan Browne and Aidan McGeady (on loan) also at the club, there is a strong Irish presence.
Meanwhile, League One outfit Charlton are also interested.
The bids are expected to be in the region of €250,000. City must weigh up the risks of losing Maguire for their title challenge and European campaign against the potential revenue as Maguire could leave for free at the end of the season.
