Everton and Ireland fullback Seamus Coleman hasn’t featured on a football pitch since he was on the receiving end of a horror challenge while on international duty against Wales last March. The Killybegs native has been slowly working his way back to fitness, and this evening will reach a significant landmark in his recovery as he makes his long-awaited return after the double-leg break.
Coleman has been included in the Everton U23 squad for their game tonight against Portsmouth in the Premier League Cup, per the Liverpool Echo.
Sam Allardyce mentioned in recent weeks that Coleman could still be a long way off full fitness, but should he get game-time under his belt for David Unsworth’s side, it will be a sight that can bring a smile to the faces of football fans everywhere.
The game will be streamed live on Everton’s Youtube channel.
As one Republic of Ireland star is on the cusp of a return, another is just beginning the same journey of recovery, after James McCarthy suffered a double leg break of his own against West Brom at the weekend.
McCarthy will be looking to his club and international teammate for inspiration as he undergoes his rehabilitation.
