There appears to be no way back for Bastian Schweinsteiger at Manchester United.

The 32-year-old has been frozen out by manager José Mourinho ever since the new boss came to the club, the reason for which has yet to be come common knowledge (though Schweinsteiger’s close relationship with Louis van Gaal is one of the more popular theories).

Though he has been included in Man United’s Premier League squad list and retained his shirt number, the former German international has been nowhere near the first-team squad in either a playing or training sense, instead maintaining fitness with the development squad.

Despite having a number of opportunities to leave Old Trafford in the summer, Schweinsteiger instead maintained the futile hope of clawing his way back into the senior picture.

This week saw the squad congregate at Carrington for their official 2016/17 photo shoot, and Schweinsteiger was nowhere to be seen.

Mourinho, some of his backroom staff and 25 players all posed for the photos, while Schweinsteiger had no involvement.

He is still sending positive messages to the team through his Twitter account, but that appears to be the only interaction he has with his teammates these days.

With his chances off forcing his way into Mourinho’s Man United plans obliterated in recent months, expect Schweinsteiger to finally move on in January with his most likely destination being the MLS.
