Santi Cazorla will not feature again for Arsenal this season and is now focusing on being fit for August, as reported by the Mirror.
The midfielder has had an extremely frustrating season so far for Arsenal. Having played his last game for the Gunners in October, he has sat out the rest of the season with an ankle injury. Despite recent reports that he would feature again for Arsenal before season-end, the persistent nature of the injury has now ruled that out.
Having undergone multiple operations on his ankle in an effort to recover, Cazorla has clearly been trying everything. The latest of these is thought to have worked by his medical team, but a long recovery period is required which will take him past the end of the season. This has been a season that promised much with the midfielder in the side, but his departure has perhaps played a part in Arsenal’s title tilt falling limp yet again.
Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny have been tasked with making light of Cazorla’s absence although they have clearly come up short. Arsenal’s ‘soft centre’ has been exposed routinely this season and this trend is likely to continue in Cazorla’s absence.
The injury also raises the question as to whether he will ever return to peak fitness, which saw him establish himself as one of the most important players in Wenger’s side. He has missed much of the season and given his age, 32, Arsenal may be wise to begin searching for a replacement.
There has reportedly been interest from Spain in particular for Cazorla’s services although the Mirror believes there to be no question of him leaving the Emirates despite such speculation.
