Despite having let Paul Pogba leave for next to nothing just four years ago, many ex-Manchester United players feel the club are right to get the Frenchman back to Old Trafford regardless of the size of the transfer fee.
Rio Ferdinand spoke of his amazement that the club allowed Juventus to take their hot prospect in 2012, and now ex-Manchester United captain Roy Keane has had his say on what could be a record breaking transfer.
Speaking as a pundit on ITV ahead of last nights Euro 2016 Final (where Pogba’s France lost out to Portugal), Keane spoke of the possible move – as reported in The Daily Mirror:
“What you’re looking at, is the potential of him.
“He’s still a young player and he will mature over the next few years, and that’s why, if does go back to United, they’re still buying that potential.
“But he will be a top player for the next ten years.”
Roy Keane should know what it takes to be a top player at Manchester United having formed one of the clubs best partnerships with Paul Scholes, a pairing seen as the heartbeat of the success under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Millions have been spent trying to replace those two club legends, with the lack of stature in midfield seen as one of the main problems of United’s demise in recent seasons.
If rumours are true that Manchester United intend to land both Pogba and his French teammate, Blaise Matuidi, then Jose Mourinho may finally have solved at least one problem.
It will be hard for Juventus to turn down such an offer and with Real Madrid unable to match it, it is now up to Pogba to decide if he wishes to return to Old Trafford and prove those who doubted him first time around that he can be a legend at the club just like Roy Keane.
It will certainly come as a boost to Pogba that ex-skipper Keane believes he can mature into a top player at Old Trafford.
