Wayne Rooney began his MLS career in fine fashion as he helped new club DC United to a 3-1 win against Vancouver Whitecaps.
The former England captain began the clash on the subs’ bench, but was handed his debut (resulting in a huge reaction from the crowd) just before the hour mark with his side already 1-0 up.
His first major contribution to US football came in the 80th minute when his short pass to Paul Arriola ended with the midfielder scoring his second goal from distance to virtually end the tie as a contest – a simple assist, perhaps, but they all count.

Rooney came close to getting on the scoresheet late on, but his goalbound header was saved at the last second by visiting goalkeeper Brian Rowe.
Overall, however, the 32-year-old will be happy with his introduction to the MLS, helping DC United to earn their biggest home victory of the season. They remain bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference, but the victory – coupled with Toronto’s loss at Orlando – means that the gap has been reduced to just two points.
