What a year it has been for Real Madrid and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo. Champions League winner, Euro 2016 champion and now he sees off Antoine Griezmann and arch nemesis Lionel Messi to pick up world football’s most coveted individual award.

This adds to his previous Ballon d’Or wins in 2008, 2013 and 2014 as he closes the gap on Messi, who has five Ballon d’Or awards to his name.

Love him or hate him, the Portuguese maestro is one of the greatest players ever to grace a football pitch. People might argue Messi is better but Ronaldo has been a magnificent athlete for years now and his goalscoring ability is unmatched.

The football world has since paid tribute on Twitter.
