Real Madrid put a massive foot in the final of the Champions League final on Tuesday night with a commanding display against rivals Atletico and the Bernabeu.
Diego Simeone’s men had their chances, but on the whole they were simply blown away by their more illustrious city neighbours in the first semi-final of the week.
At the heart of proceedings, as is so often the case, was Real Madrid talisman Cristiano Ronaldo. His two goals swung the tie completely in Real’s favour, and while his first had a hint of controversy about it, his second was simply the work of a phenomenal striker.
The Portuguese forward had a hint of fortune about the way the ball fell to him following the intervention of Diego Godin, but Ronaldo made no mistake with the finish, contorting his body and unleashing a brilliant drive that gave Atleti keeper Jan Oblak absolutely no chance.
The number seven completed his hat-trick with five minutes remaining, finding himself unmarked on the end of a break to complete the rout and register the 39th treble of his career.
With the game nearing the closing stages, Real look set to take a 3-0 lead to the Calderon next week, and will now be firm favourites to reach their second consecutive final, wherein they will face the winners of Juventus versus Monaco in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
Real’s quest to become the first team to defend the trophy in its current form goes on, and Ronaldo’s 101st, 102nd and 103rd goals have put them in this fantastic position.
