Chelsea Target Rejected Transfer To Serie A Champions This Summer [Sky Sports]

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku was one of the Premier League’s most talked about players this summer, with numerous reports suggesting a big money return to Chelsea.

In a summer that saw a number of high profile returns, including Paul Pogba’s return to Manchester United and David Luiz’s return to Chelsea, the much touted return of Lukaku back to the London club did, at times, seem to be all but a done deal.

However, despite having requested permission to leave Goodison Park during the summer, when the dusted settled on the transfer madness, the Belgium international is still an Everton player.

Now, as reported by Sky Sports News, it seems that while Chelsea were trying to lure the 23-year-old back to Stamford Bridge, Italian giants, Juventus were also quietly pursuing the striker.

What’s more, according to the player himself, he actually turned down the chance to move to Turin and link up with the Serie A champions.

“It stings a little [not being in European competition], but I’m someone who believes that everything happens for a reason.”

“Otherwise I would have gone to Juventus instead of staying at Everton. But I opted for Everton because it was too early for Italy and I have not done badly here.”

He added,

“Now we have a new coach and it is completely different than with Mr Martinez, but I think we can make progress under Ronald Koeman. It may be the last step and then look further.”

“I knew of the interest of a few clubs, it was quickly very clear that Everton would not let me go. It was important to me that I remained calm, and I did.”

“I said to myself that I will do my best, and who knows what will happen in the future.”

So while it seems the long term future of Romelu Lukaku may well not involve Everton, for now at least, he remains committed to the Merseyside club and it’s progression within the Premier League.
