Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers believes that the world class quality of Steven Gerrard can help Mario Balotelli thrive at Anfield.
The 24-year-old Italian was dropped as Liveerpool gained a much needed win against West Brom on Saturday but Rodgers believes that Gerrard can help the former Manchester City striker find his feet at the Reds following his £16 million move in August.
The Liverpool manager explained how the quality of Gerrard’s passing can aid the Italian.
“He is a superstar player. This player is world class and for people playing alongside Steven Gerrard it’s a privilege.
“Steven is a player that makes the game look simple and Mario knows that he is playing with one of the greats of the game.
“So it’s a combination of a top, outstanding player like Steven feeding a guy [like Mario] who needs certain types of passes and Steven can provide them.”
Gerrard was moved to a more advanced midfield role in the last few minutes of action against West Brom and linked up well with Balotelli who had been introduced for Rickie Lambert.
Balotelli has been left out of Italy’s recent squad by new Azzuri boss Antonio Conte. The former Juventus boss has elected to instead call up Southampton striker Graziano Pelle ahead of the Liverpool striker.
Meanwhile Rodgers is adamant that teenage prodigy Raheem Sterling will be staying at Liverpool for the foreseeable future.
Yes. Absolutely adamant.
“I don’t think there is anything other than that. His agent is a good agent and he understands this is the perfect place for him.
“The boy is remarkably happy here and there are no secondary thoughts about anything else other than continuing to play for Liverpool.”
Liverpool meet QPR after the international break and will be hoping that striker Daniel Sturridge is ready to return to action after missing the last number of weeks with a thigh injury.
