Report: Barcelona Could Be Left With Gaping Hole In Their Defence Next Season

Reports have emerged that former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano could be about to leave Barcelona in favour of a move to Italian champions Juventus.

As reported in the Mirror, the Argentinian has grown concerned at reports his club are looking to sign a top central defender this summer to play alongside Gerrard Pique, making him surplus to requirements.

Barcelona outlet SPORT however claim “an agreement in principle” for Mascherano to move to the Serie A champions on a three-year deal has been agreed.

This would come as a huge blow to Luis Enrique’s side, with whom Mascherano has played a key role in a highly successful season, which saw Barca claim the Copa del Rey in a win over Sevilla last weekend, a game in which Mascherano was dismissed, after wrapping up the La Liga title the previous week.

The former defensive midfielder has been a key part of Barcelona’s success playing at the heart of the defence alongside Pique. Perhaps a move to Italy may give him the chance to revert back to his preferred position or, as is a common thread between players and clubs these days, he could be using the speculation to earn a new deal at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona have much work to do this summer to hold on to their star names. Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic and Neymar have all been linked with moves away from the club, with improved contracts now key to prolonging their stay.

The club are already in the market for two new defenders with Marc Bartra and Thomas Vermaelen set to leave the club during the summer window (via Metro), and they will not want to lose someone of Mascherano’s ability.

Barcelona are said to have no intention of letting him go easily and it remains to be seen if Mascherano, who has won four La Liga titles and two Champions League winner’s medals, can leave the hugely successful club behind.
