Exclusive: Ray Houghton Worried About Ireland’s Weak Link Ahead Of Euro 2016

The Republic of Ireland face a huge task in France next month, as they are pitted against Sweden, Belgium and Italy in their group at Euro 2016.

While it is a mammoth challenge, many believe that the Boys in Green are capable of pulling off a shock and qualifying for the second round.

Should Martin O’Neill’s side overcome Sweden in the opening game, things will become a lot easier. However, in order for this to happen, they will need to find goals, something that worries Ireland legend Ray Houghton.

“Take out Robbie Keane, Kevin Doyle and Shane Long, there are not many who have scored for Ireland. We don’t score an awful lot. James McCarthy, Jeff Hendrick, Glenn Whelan have not scored many.”

However, he feels that some players are capable of making the step up.

“I’m a big fan of James McCarthy, I think he could add goals to his game.

“If we give him a licence to get forward, I think he’s got the ability. He sits a bit deeper, but he has got the capability to get forward.

“James McClean as well. He’s a big lad, if he gets forward, he can score a couple of headers.”
