Manchester United take on Ajax in the Europa League final on Wednesday night, with both teams looking to add to already bulging trophy cabinets.
However, while Ajax already have a pathway into the Champions League via the Eredivisie, this match is Jose Mourinho’s last chance to guide his Man United side into Europe’s premier club competition at the first time of asking.
This is by no means the first time that these two sides have faced each other (in fact it will be the fifth) but, interestingly for two sides with such strong European Cup histories, the Europa League/UEFA Cup is the only competition in which they have played each other.
The last time the Dutch side came to town, they won 2-1 at Old Trafford in February 2012, but went down 3-2 on aggregate. The away goals that day were scored by Aras Ozbiliz and a young Toby Alderweireld in a side that also featured Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen, Siem De Jong and Vurnon Anita – all of whom have gone on to play in the Premier League.
On the bench that evening (coming on for the final ten minutes) was one Daley Blind, who will, of course, be playing for the opposition in Stockholm on Wednesday.
But how much do you remember from the Man United side that night, defeated in the match itself but victors on aggregate?
Take the quiz below and find out.
And, just for good measure, here are the goals from that spring evening at Old Trafford…
