Liverpool lock horns with Real Madrid this weekend as they look to become European champions for the sixth time in their history.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will be the underdogs against Zinedine Zidane’s Champions League aristocrats, but will be confident of leaving the Spanish giants trailing in their wake on Saturday night.
The last time Liverpool faced Real Madrid, however, the mood was markedly less optimistic. The Spaniards had bossed Brendan Rodgers’ men off the park at Anfield in a 3-0 win just a fortnight earlier, and the Reds’ hopes of making the last sixteen were hanging by a thread at the midway point of a poor group stage campaign.
When the teamsheet for the reverse fixture was announced, Liverpool fans were in uproar as a number of first choice regulars were left out of the starting lineup – prompting suggestions from an angry supporter base that Rodgers was conceding defeat before a ball had been kicked.
As it turned out, Real did win the match (albeit by 1-0 in an attritional game) on their way to claiming the first of three Champions League titles in four years – but how much of that evening in Madrid in November 2014 can you remember?
