According to noted French sports newspaper L’Equipe, Edinson Cavani has set Premier League clubs’ radars on high alert after refusing to sign the new contract offered to him by Paris Saint-Germain.
The Uruguayan forward, who is now 29 years old, has a deal at the French club until 2018. However, if these reports are to be believed, he could leave the club for nothing in January 2018 as contract discussions – which started in April – have not yet brought any successful conclusion.
In such a scenario, for fear of not recouping any of his initial transfer fee, it would be much more likely that PSG will try to sell him before then, possibly in the summer transfer window of 2017 or even sooner.
Cavani has always been a long time target of Premier League clubs, particularly Arsenal and Chelsea. Manchester United were also said to have been interested in buying him at one stage, before plumping for Cavani’s ex-team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic instead.
While Cavani has perhaps never fully convinced as a world class striker, at least in the same mould as his international compatriot Luis Suarez, his stats are still impressive nonetheless.
He netted 78 league goals for Napoli in his three seasons at the club, before scoring 81 times in his first three years at PSG. This year he has been particularly in form, with 11 goals in his first nine games of the season. It suggests he is ready to take over Ibrahimovic’s mantle at the French club and establish himself as a truly top echelon star.

Arsenal are currently employing Alexis Sanchez in a makeshift central forward role and while the Chilean has impressed, a specialist South American centre forward could be even more effective.
Chelsea, on the other hand, with Diego Costa and Michy Batshuayi already in their ranks, may find they have less space for the Uruguayan. However, all current Premier League clubs will be encouraged by the latest news.
