Premier League Heroes: Sergio Aguero

This week’s Premier League hero is Sergio Aguero, arguably one of the greatest players to have graced the game.

Sergio Leonel Aguero del Castillo was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on the 2nd of June 1988. The Argentine began his football career at the age of nine when he became a youth player at Independiente. Aguero quickly developed into one of the hottest talents in South America and after scoring 23 goals in 54 for Independiente, he moved on to Spanish club Atletico Madrid in 2006 for €23m which broke Atletico’s transfer record at the time. Aguero enjoyed a successful time at Atletico as he won a Europa League, an Intertoto Cup and a Super Cup during his time in Madrid and also managed to score 74 goals in 175 appearances for the club.

Aguero was linked with all of the top clubs across Europe but it was Manchester City who ended up signing the striker on a 5 year contract in July 2011 after they agreed a €45m/£37m fee with Atletico. Aguero was handed the number 16 shirt at City and had an unbelievable debut for his new club on the 15th of August 2011 against Swansea City when he came on as a substitute to score twice and make one assist in a 4-0 win.

Aguero scored his first hat-trick for City against Wigan which was only his third start for the club. The striker also managed to score a 93rd minute winner against Villarreal in a 2-1 win on the 18th of October 2011 and then scored 5 days later in the Manchester derby which City won 6-1. Aguero just seemed to get better and better as they 11/12 season progressed as he scored 23 goals in 34 league games and his most important goal came on the last day of the season against QPR. City had to beat QPR to win the league as Manchester City beat Sunderland but as the game approached the 95th minute, it still remained 2-2. Balotelli gifted a ball to Aguero in the dying moments which he quickly brought into QPR’s penalty area and slotted home a low shot to break Manchester United hearts and win the Premier League title for City.

Unfortunately, Aguero was stretchered off in City’s opening league game of the 12/13 against Southampton with a knee injury. This meant Aguero had to wait until the 29th of September 2012 to score his first league goal which came against Fulham and he scored again in a fixture with Sunderland. The striker suffered another knee injury in a game against Chelsea in February but returned in time to score the only goal in another Manchester derby win for City. Aguero also helped City defeat Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final but they lost the final 1-0 to Wigan. Aguero’s final and 12th league goal of the season came against Reading on the 14th of May 2013.

Aguero began the 13/14 season with a goal in a 4-0 win over Newcastle and scored again in 4-1 win over Manchester United on the 22nd of September 2013. Aguero was awarded Premier League Player of the Month in October 2013 as he managed to score 5 goals in 4 games in that month.

On the 24th of November 2013, the striker scored two goals against Tottenham to overtake Thierry Henry to become the player with the highest goal per game ratio in Premier League history. The second half of Aguero’s 13/14 season was hampered with injuries, but he still managed to score 17 goals in 23 appearances as City won the Premier League again in dramatic fashion.

The Argentinian began the 14/15 season by signing a new contract with City and then coming on as a substitute and scoring in the opening game of the season against Newcastle on the 17th of August. On the 18th of October 2014, the striker scored four times in City’s 4-1 win over Tottenham and surpassed Carlos Tevez as City’s all time highest goal scorer in the Premier League. On the 25th of November, Aguero scored a hat trick against Bayern Munich to defeat the Germans 3-2 in the Champions League group stage. The striker was also named Football Supporters’ Federation Player of the Year 2014 as well as Premier League Player of the Month for November 2014. Since December 2014, Aguero’s 14/15 season has been affected by injury but there is no doubt that the talented striker will find a way to regain his form.
