In case it needed repeating, Paul Pogba became the most expensive footballer ever when he completed his €105m move from Juventus to Manchester United on Monday night.
Obviously, that now also makes him the most expensive central midfielder in history too, breaking a record set earlier this summer with Granit Xhaka’s €45m move to Arsenal.
Meanwhile, 22-year-old centre-back John Stones became the costliest defender ever by completing a €55.6m move to Manchester City, surpassing the initial €49.5m paid by Paris Saint-Germain for David Luiz in 2014 (though both fees could rise through the activation of add-ons).
Interestingly, of the most expensive player for each position, eight of them have come in the past three years – four of which have been broken this summer.
