Philipp Lahm’s shock announcement that he will retire early at the end of this campaign, at the relatively young age of 33 has sent Bayern Munich into a panic that could have serious repercussions for Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho was believed to have lined up a summer move for the £35m rated Benfica right-back Nelson Semedo with Lahm’s impending departure now bringing Semedo into the thoughts of Bayern Munich as a possible replacement.

The Sun report that the German champions managed by Carlo Ancelotti will now attempt to snare the Portuguese defender from under the nose of the Old Trafford club just as they did last summer with fellow Portuguese and Benfica player Renato Sanches, who was believed to be heading to Manchester United under Louis Van Gaal, only for Munich to announce the surprising signing of Sanches months earlier.

According to O Jogo, Ancelotti will now turn to Semedo following the shock announcement of Philipp Lahm to retire early with the club reportedly unaware of the player’s thoughts on bringing his retirement forward.

Antonio Valencia has enjoyed a rejuvenated career at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho with his manager labeling him the greatest right back in the world and revealed he tried to sign the former Wigan man while in charge of Real Madrid.

Mourinho however, like Ancelotti is looking to the long term future of the right back position and sees Semedo, who has shone in the Portuguese league this season, as one of the brightest young players to emerge in his position. He was keen on bringing the player to Old Trafford last month only for Benfica’s unwillingness to allow their star man to depart the club midway through a campaign.

Manchester United fans will be hoping the player will be eager to team up with his compatriot Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford and turn down the advances of the German champions.

The capture of Sanches from under their noses last summer will leave United fans fearing the worst.
