With the League of Ireland set to kick off on Friday evening, one diehard fan has penned an incredible open letter pleading with the Irish public to get involved…
Although football (or soccer) is the most widely played and supported sport in the nation, the League of Ireland is bizarrely cast aside as some sort of hipster sideshow with the majority of Irish football fans turning their attention to the Premier League.
Walking down any bustling Irish street, one is far more likely to come across several Liverpool, Manchester United or Arsenal shirts than a single League of Ireland strip.
However, in recent years, the roaring form of sides like Dundalk and Cork City has seen Ireland’s top tier of football hitting a period of renaissance and now, one supporter has sent out an incredible open letter about the ‘Greatest League In The World’.
Posting the declaration of love to Reddit Soccer the cry for support has incredibly become one of the top ten posts worldwide and can be read in full below.
Known to us Irish people as the #GreatestLeagueInTheWorld, the Airtricity League Premier Division kicks off tomorrow evening. To most people around the world, the league is unknown.
However, it was the starting point for many of Ireland’s greatest players: Roy Keane, Robbie Keane, Kevin Doyle, Wes Hoolahan, Robbie Brady, David Meyler and Seamus Coleman (to name just a few) Split into two ten team divisions, the league is highly disrespected by many in Ireland as Gaelic Games and Rugby are more popular.
However, to me and many other diehard fans, the league means more than that. It’s a way of life. We go week in, week out, and see the same faces every week, to watch our local heroes (who you can chat with on Twitter/Instagram, add on Facebook and go for a cup of coffee with if your lucky) fight to the bitter end to ultimately win the trophy.
I’d really appreciate if you could all, just for one year, pick a team, and support the league, because it needs it. My team, Cork City FC, is both the reigning league and cup champions, and situated in the magnificent city of Cork, in the south of the country. I have listed all the teams from the premier division below, as well as their locations, and I will attach a few videos well worth watching. Thanks for reading, and please support the #GreatestLeagueInTheWorld
