Perez And Mustafi Signings Imminent For Arsenal According To BBC Journalist

Sports journalist for the BBC David Ornstein has tweeted in the last half hour that fees for both Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez have been agreed or are in the process of being finalised.

It is reported that Arsenal have triggered Lucas Perez’ release clause of £17.1 million, while they will pay in excess of £35 million for Mustafi. The news will delight Arsenal fans as two of their problem positions in centre-forward and centre-back appear to have been addressed.

Arsène Wenger has continually been criticised for not strengthening the spine of his team for many years in the transfer market, so this represents a significant departure from his usual frugal approach.

It appears that injuries to centre-backs Gabriel and captain Per Mertasacker have provided a touch more urgency to his pursuit of a new defender, while Arsenal’s makeshift tactic of deploying Alexis Sánchez as an out-and-out striker has not proven successful, thereby demonstrating that they need another striker for what is sure to an arduous season ahead on both domestic and European fronts.

With Wenger’s contract up at the end of this season, it seems he is gearing up for a serious challenge for the league title, whereas many have said in the past that he is content with simply securing Champions League qualification every year.

Both Mustafi and Perez could go a long way to vaulting Arsenal back to a trophy-winning season.
